EL PASO- UAB Volleyball fell to UTEP in three tough sets in Memorial Gym.

Alex Kells had 13 kills, Tatijana Fucka had four total blocks, and Kiana Mack had two service aces.

UTEP (16-5, 5-3) got off to a hot start in Set 1, with a burst of scoring that saw them stretch their lead to 21-14, UAB (9-11, 4-4) regained momentum with points of their own, before UTEP pulled ahead to take the set 25-18.

The second set went right down to the wire, UAB took the lead 18-13, but a furious UTEP comeback saw the score get tied at 20. The two squads traded points back and forth, but the Miners eventually came out on top 27-25.

In Set 3, The Blazers fought hard, and tied the set at 22, but UTEP wrestled back control and won the set 25-23, and the match 3-0.

Coach Betsy Freeburg said, "While today certainly did not go our way, coming out of El Paso with a split against a very good UTEP team is still a success. We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend. We learned that we can run offense pin to pin and get productivity from both our left sides and our right sides. We learned that when we give locked in defensive effort, we become a force to be reckoned with. We also learned that we must get better blocking and defending pins. While we are happy to come back to Birmingham with one win, we are hungry to get better for our next match up against Rice."

Next weekend, UAB will host Rice in Bartow Arena on Friday, October 29 at 6 p.m., and Saturday, October 30 on 1 p.m. Friday's match will be Youth Volleyball Night, youth aged 17 and under that show up to the game wearing UAB gear will get free admission. Saturday's match will have a Halloween theme, any fan that wears a Halloween costume will receive free admission.

Due to the recent surge of COVID-19 and updated CDC guidance, UAB will require face masks indoors on campus – regardless of vaccine status – effective Thursday, July 29. Individuals can briefly unmask while eating or drinking.
