BIRMINGHAM – The UAB rifle team will continue its 2021-22 season on Saturday when the Blazers travel to Georgia Southern. Saturday's match against the Eagles will begin at 8 a.m.
"We look forward to getting back out on the range this weekend," head coach Lori Goodwin said. "We had a strong start in the smallbore two weekends ago, and we are working to put together a complete performance in Statesboro on Saturday."
The Blazers will send the same seven student-athletes to this weekend's competition as they to their season opener against The Citadel on Oct. 2. Seniors Sophia Flores and Jordan Blankenship, juniors Tommy Loring, Amy Kohan, and Maggie Vonderau, and sophomores Claire Vonderau and Taylor Jones will travel for the Green and Gold.
Maggie Vonderau finished third overall at The Citadel with an aggregate score of 1,143, missing out on tying for the top individual score by just six points. Vonderau paced the Blazers in the air rifle standings with a fourth-place score of 578. She also placed fourth in the smallbore standings with a score of 565.
Kohan and Flores took home the top two spots in the smallbore standings with scores of 571 and 567, respectively, on Oct. 2. The Blazers outscored the Bulldogs 2,250-2,235 in the team smallbore standings.
Georgia Southern (2-2), who rose to No. 17 in this week's College Rifle Coaches Association poll after a pair of wins over the weekend, fell to the Blazers in UAB's opening match of the 2020-21 season. The Green and Gold edged the Eagles 4,572-4,542 in Statesboro, Georgia, on Oct. 30.
UAB finished just one spot behind Georgia Southern at the 2020-21 Southern Conference Championships in March. The Blazers topped Georgia Southern in the air rifle standings, but the Eagles' advantage in the smallbore lifted them to a second-place finish.
Following Saturday's match, UAB will travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina, for a match at Wofford on Oct. 30.
