A Letter to Blazer Nation From Director of Athletics Mark Ingram
1/8/2021 10:52:00 AM | General, Blazer Boosters
Blazer Nation,
Happy New Year! We hope you've had a wonderful holiday season with friends and family and are excited about 2021. While 2020 had its fair share of challenges, the Blazers have enjoyed remarkable success along the way.
UAB became the first school in C-USA history to win their football division title three years in a row while winning the Conference USA championship for the second time in three years. While we ultimately did not get the opportunity to play in our bowl game, it was the fourth consecutive year our football program was selected.
Our rifle team won its conference championship for the second year in a row. Women's cross country won its first team title since 2014. Men's golf is ranked #5 in the nation which is the highest ranking in program history, and men's basketball started their season 7-0 for the best start in program history and currently owns a #59 NET ranking which is tops in C-USA.
UAB won the C-USA SAAC Cup for community service and launched Blazer Allies which is dedicated to celebrating our diversity and facing social justice issues. Our student-athletes also earned an incredible 3.25 GPA for the fall term with 298 of our 400 student-athletes obtaining a 3.0 GPA or higher.
Financially, we raised $4.6 million in cash and pledges through Blazer Boosters in 2020 and increased our basketball season tickets sold, even with our COVID limitations. We added more than 450 new donors to Blazer Boosters as part of our IGNITE membership campaign and 43% of our loyal donors increased their gift from the 2019 giving year. We have several facility projects that we've been raising funds for, including more than $6 million committed towards our men's and women's basketball practice facility.
As we look ahead, men's and women's basketball conference play began Jan. 1; our two soccer teams along with volleyball and beach volleyball will begin their seasons in the coming month. Baseball and softball are scheduled to start on time this February, and UAB will host the C-USA Indoor Track Championships on February 21-22 at the Birmingham Crossplex.
We are less than 10 months away from calling Protective Stadium our new home. I would encourage you to commit now by completing your Protective Stadium Letter of Intent which secures an appointment time during the 2021 seat selection process. Fans will have the ability to select the seats they want beginning in April following the April 1, 2021 football priority seat deadline. Call Blazer Boosters at (205) 996-9969 with any questions you might have or visit UABSports.com/ProtectiveStadium for more information and ways to guarantee yourself the best seats possible for the inaugural season at Protective Stadium.
Thanks so much for your continued support of UAB Athletics. We hope to see you soon and are looking forward to a great 2021…Go Blazers!
