BIRMINGHAM – Caitlynn Daniels was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. She averaged 17.5 points per game and shot 57.1% from the field in UAB's 2-0 weekend on the road at Southern Miss.
This is the first weekly honor of her career.
Daniels, who started both games for the Blazers (7-3, 2-2 C-USA), led all scorers in the Jan. 8 matchup against the Golden Eagles, scoring a career-high 21 points. The guard went 6-of-11 from the field, 3-of-6 from behind the arc and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line.
In the second game on Jan. 9 at Southern Miss, the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native racked up two career highs with six assists and eight boards.
She ranks second among all active C-USA freshman in assists, racking up 35 in UAB's 10 games, and is No. 5 overall in the league in assist/turnover average at 1.6.
Daniels, who has made six starts, has been the only freshman in the Blazers' starting lineup this season.
"I'm really excited for Caitlynn as she is very deserving and has been improving each week," head coach Randy Norton said. "She works on her game for hours and hours outside of practice all on her own. She has an amazing work ethic on the court and in the classroom."
The Blazers return home on Jan. 15-16, when they host C-USA opponent Charlotte (3-4, 2-0 C-USA) in Bartow Arena.
