UAB Volleyball Player Profiles: Liberos

BIRMINGHAM — UABSports.com wraps up the preview of the 2020-21 UAB volleyball team with a look at the liberos consisting of Brianna Muller, Aubrey Huffman and Erin Powers.
"Defensive specialists and liberos in our program are expected to perform these skills exceptionally well: serve, pass, defend, secondary set and cover," said head coach Betsy Freeburg. "The main goal of a libero should smoothly transition our team from defense to offense as they often receive a ball from an opponent and deliver the ball to a teammate with the same contact. Our defensive specialists and liberos are charged to be independent and create ownership of their spaces while always giving to the team."
Brianna Muller, Jr., San Antonio, Texas
In 2019, Muller played in 27 matches and 95 sets while making five starts. She had a career-high 24 digs versus Charlotte on Nov. 10, 2019. During the 2018 season, Muller played in 26 matches and made a pair of starts. She produced a career-high nine assists versus Florida A&M on Aug. 31, 2018. In high school, Muller was a two-time "USA" National Champion with the San Antonio Magic.
Coach Freeburg on Muller:
Brianna comes of a year with a lot of experience as libero. We are asking her to bring more awareness to the position this year and really value her contacts. She is starting to gain and understanding of what we are looking for in the libero and defensive specialist position.
Aubrey Huffman, So., Calera, Ala.
During her freshman season, Huffman played in two matches and two sets.
Coach Freeburg on Huffman:
At the beginning of the year, we challenged Aubrey to really invest in her serve and she has developed quite a variety of serves that will help us get other teams out of systems. She is also gaining more comfort in our system and learning how to be more simple in her movements.
Erin Powers, Fr., Mukwonago, Wisc.
For Mukwonago High School, Powers was named to Second Team All-Conference her sophomore year and First Team All-Conference her junior and senior years. In addition to volleyball, Powers played softball all four years.
Coach Freeburg on Powers:
Erin comes from an elite club background and has one of the best training mindsets in our gym. Every day she comes in with a determination to stay focused and get better. This is translating well to her production in match play as she continually leads the team in her passing numbers.
