UAB Women’s Golf Ties for Fourth at Hoover Invitational

HOOVER, Ala. – Led by Tia Teiniketo placing second and Shelly Chen taking fourth, the host UAB women's golf team tied for fourth overall at the Hoover Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Hoover Country Club.
The Blazers shot +27 as a team and tied Middle Tennessee for fourth place. The University of Indianapolis won the event at +8, and was followed by WKU (+14), Southern Illinois (+23), UAB and Middle Tennessee.
"We are trending in the right direction," said head coach Ryan Ashburn. "We still have a couple of things we need to work on, but I'm thankful we are able to play this fall so we can continue to get better. I am very proud of Tia and Shelly. They have played consistently well these past two events and I'm excited to see what they do the rest of the fall. We now have two and a half weeks before our next event to continue to work on the small things and get prepared for Arkansas State.
Teiniketo was only one of two players in the field to finish under par as she carded a -1 en route to her second-consecutive Top 10 finish to start the season. Teiniketo shot 73-72-70 throughout here three rounds.
Freshman Shelly Chen also had a standout tournament as she tied for fourth place overall at +1. After consecutive rounds of 73 on Monday, Chen shot a one under 71 in Tuesday's final round.
Rounding out UAB's lineup, Stephenie Fowler tied for 28th overall at +12 and had her lowest round of 74 on the first 18 holes. Freshman Emilia Smith followed with a +15 which tied her for 38th, and Caroline Waldrop finished tied for 60th.
The Blazers are now 8-6-1 on the young season and turn their attention to Arkansas State for the Lady Redwolves Classic on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 12-13, in Jonesboro, Ark.
