BIRMINGHAM – The UAB football team has added two home games to its 2020 schedule and will kick the season off in just two weeks on Thursday, Sept. 3, against Central Arkansas at 7 p.m.
The Blazers and Louisiana have also reached an agreement for a game at Legion Field on Friday, Oct. 23. These two additional games round out UAB's 2020 slate with the Blazers set to play six home games at Legion Field. Both of these games are pending final contract approval.
Central Arkansas and Louisiana replace the games against New Mexico State and Alabama A&M that were lost when those teams postponed their seasons earlier this month.
UCA opened the 2019 slate by defeating WKU 35-28 in Bowling Green. The Bears would go on to finish 9-4 overall and were crowned Co-Champions of the Southland Conference. They earned the No. 8 national seed in the FCS Playoffs in 2019, but were upset in the second round by Illinois State.
The Bears were voted to win the Southland Conference this year. Junior quarterback Breylin Smith returns after throwing 32 touchdowns and a school record 3,704 yards last season. This will be the first meeting between UAB and UCA.
The Ragin' Cajuns finished 11-3 last year and won the Lendingtree Bowl 27-17 over Miami (OH). Louisiana's only three losses in 2019 came against Mississippi State and Appalachian State (twice).
Louisiana was one of the top rushing teams in the nation last year and set its school record with 3,608 total rushing yards. Elijah Mitchell (1,147 yards, 16 touchdowns) and Trey Ragas (820 yards, 11 touchdowns) both return for their senior seasons.
UAB and Louisiana also announced a future home-and-home series for 2023 and 2026 with the first game coming in Birmingham and the second in Lafayette.
UAB Football is planning on accommodating fans during the 2020 season at Legion Field, and the best way to guarantee your seat is by purchasing season tickets which start as low as $75. Blazer Boosters members and current season ticket holders will also have top priority at Protective Stadium entering 2021. Click here to purchase tickets.
