UAB Baseball Earns 2019-20 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award

BIRMINGHAM – For continuing its highly achieving performance in the classroom, the UAB baseball team has earned the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award.
The ABCA presents the Team Academic Excellence Award to member programs with a collective 3.0 GPA or above. For the Blazers, last spring was the 25th consecutive semester maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher, a streak that has now span more than 12 years.
"This is a great honor for UAB baseball to be recognized again by the ABCA," said interim head coach Perry Roth. "The expectations Coach Brian Shoop had for excellence in the classroom that has been met by our players for 12 consecutive years is truly remarkable.
"What our players do academically to earn a world class UAB degree shows dedication and tremendous work ethic. I also want to thank our academic counselor Erin Brady. She is extremely talented at her job and works incredibly hard for our guys to succeed. Erin is greatly appreciated by our players and coaches."
The Blazers posted a collective 3.078 in the fall semester and a 3.455 in the spring. UAB had 26 players with a 3.0 or better in the fall and 33 players with a 3.0 or better in the spring, including nine players who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA.
"It would have been so easy for our guys to feel sorry for themselves with the way the spring season went, but they again showed their high character in pursuit of their degrees. We have a tough group of guys who possess a strong work ethic," Perry said.
UAB is one of three teams in Conference USA to earn recognition from the ABCA, along with Florida Atlantic and Old Dominion, and one of 63 Division I schools honored overall. The Blazers are one of 10 teams in the country to have earned this distinction each year since the award started in 2015-16.
