Overseas Update: Kelsey Daugherty
7/1/2020 3:40:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Former UAB women's soccer standout goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty finished her first season with Fortuna Hjørring, leading the squad to the 2020 Elitedivisionen championship.
Daugherty finished the season playing in 17 matches – 13 in Elitedivisionen and four in the UEFA Women's Champions League, where Fortuna advanced to the Round of 16.
The league suspended play on March 6 due to the coronavirus pandemic before resuming play three months later. "I luckily got to go home for Covid shutdown, but once the country opened back up we all returned waiting for final news about how the season should go on," said Daugherty.
On May 27, the league announced that play would resume on June 6 with the championship round being reduced from 10 matches to five. Fortuna finished first in the main round and was awarded 10 bonus points entering the championship round. In the five matches, they went 4-0-1 to finish with 23 total points, securing the title. "It was a lot of uncertainty and waiting, but the team did a great job staying sharp over the break, and we were able to have so much success in our last five games," added Daugherty.
Since returning to play, Daugherty started a pair of matches - a 2-1 victory over VSK Aarhus and a 1-0 clean sheet win against KoldingQ.
Daugherty signed with Fortuna in May 2019. Although moving to Hjørring, Denmark was a long way from her hometown of Kennesaw, Ga., Daugherty embraced the experience. "From getting to play in the Champions League against the five-time champions Lyon, to winning the league in my first professional year," said Daugherty. "It was really hard being so far from home in a totally new place, but the experience was something I wouldn't trade."
