UAB Football Positional Preview: The Tight Ends
6/3/2020 11:34:00 AM | Football
BIRMINGHAM – Under the direction of new tight ends coach Joe Craddock, fifth year senior veteran Hayden Pittman anchors a talented unit looking to create depth in 2020.
Pittman has played in 41 career games with 13 of his 22 career starts coming last year. Known as a dominant blocking tight end, especially in the open field, Pittman also put together his best receiving season as a junior in 2019. He finished the campaign with 21 catches for 166 yards and two touchdowns.
Capping his junior season was his performances in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl where he had three catches for a career-high 59 yards, highlighted by his diving touchdown catch on UAB's first drive.
Pittman had at least one catch in every game last year and enters his senior year with a 16-game reception streak.
Gerrit Prince enters his third and final year with the Blazers and has played in 18 career games. Prince played in four games during the 2018 campaign and utilized the redshirt rule, then appeared in all 14 games last year. He finished with four catches for 23 yards and his first career touchdown in UAB's 20-14 victory over Louisiana Tech.
Aside from these two, no other Blazer has taken in-game snaps at the tight end position. Junior college transfer Maleak Bryant showed flashes of being a major contributor during the six spring practices UAB conducted prior to COVID-19. Standing at 6-foot-6, 230 lbs, the Atlanta native has huge upside as he enters his first season as a redshirt sophomore.
Redshirt senior Keilan Knight, redshirt freshman Michael York and linebacker turned tight end Terrell McDonald (R-Fr.) rounds out the tight ends group.
Pittman is one of nine returning starters on offense and one of 18 total returning starters. Entering 2020, UAB aims for its third-consecutive C-USA West Division title and its second overall C-USA title in the last three years.
The Blazers have been the winningest team in Conference USA since returning to the playing field in 2017 with 28 total victories.
UAB opens the season on Thursday, Sept. 3, against New Mexico State and looks to extend the nation's fourth longest active home winning streak. UAB is 18-0 at Legion Field since 2017.
Season tickets for 2020 are on sale starting as low as $75 with the Family Four Pack. Blazer Boosters members and current season ticket holders will have top priority for Protective Stadium entering 2021. Click here to purchase season tickets.
