BIRMINGHAM – Former UAB baseball infielder Tyler Tolbert was awarded UAB's Mr. Blaze for his performance through the 2019 season in UAB's annual Green & Golden Globe Awards on Thursday night. Mr. Blaze is awarded to one male student-athlete who excelled athletically while leading his team to success.
Led by the UAB Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Blazers' fourth annual Green & Golden Globes Awards were presented virtually through the @uabsaac Twitter and Instagram accounts. The awards recognize UAB's athletic achievements for the Spring 2019, Fall 2019 and winter 2020 seasons. Winners were voted on by the student-athletes, coaches and UAB administrators.
Tolbert was selected for the high honor of Mr. Blaze following a successful 2019 spring season that resulted in his selection in the 13th round of the MLB draft by the Kansas City Royals. The Trussville, Ala., native remains in the Royals organization, currently playing for the Idaho Falls Chukars of the Rookie Advanced league, where he most recently posted a .382 batting average with 13 hits, two doubles, three triples and six RBI in nine games.
On the diamond for the Blazers, Tolbert's season was highlighted on the basepath as he stole 41 bases. That mark pegged him sixth in the NCAA by the season's finish as he averaged 0.87 steals per game, which ranked second in the nation. Overall, he started 47 games to bat .283 with 51 hits, eight doubles, two triples, two homeruns and 21 RBI. For his career, Tolbert slid into the top 10 in UAB history with 76 total steals.
The Royals' prospect concluded his final season at UAB with a career day over 2019 Conference USA Champion Southern Miss, setting a personal mark with five hits and tying career highs with four RBI and three runs scored. Tolbert also swiped a couple of bags to add to his final tally. The Blazers downed the Golden Eagles 13-10 in the contest.
As a team, UAB finished 18-13 at home in 2019. The Blazers caught fire at the tail end of the season winning nine of their final 13 contests, including the aforementioned victory over Southern Miss and another over in-state foe Auburn.
Effective March 16, Conference USA announced that all spring sport competition and championships have been canceled. For more information regarding the Coronavirus, visit www.uab.edu/coronavirus.
