BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's basketball head coach Randy Norton announces the signing of Southern Utah transfer Claudia Armato Thursday afternoon.
"Claudia is a high character individual that brings a wealth of talent and experience to our team," said Norton. "She is a combo guard that is athletic and quick, which will benefit her on both sides of the ball. She has the ability to play multiple positions and is a great fit for our system. She also has an outstanding basketball IQ and we are very excited to add her to the UAB women's basketball family."
The 5-foot-5 guard from Melbourne, Australia spent the last two seasons at Southern Utah of the Big Sky Conference. Armato played in 27 games for the Thunderbirds in 2019-20 with 18 starts. She finished second on the team in assists (84) and third on the team in steals (31). Armato scored a career high 11 points against Oral Roberts in December of 2019.
Armato attended Penleigh and Essedon Grammar School in Melbourne where she was captain and MVP of her high school team. As a junior, in the BigV D1 Women's League she guided her team to the Youth League Championship where she was named Grand Final MVP and won the Rising Star Award. As a senior, Armato averaged 7.4 points per game while shooting 42.6 percent from the field and 46.7 percent from 3-point range. She was selected to participate in the NBA's Basketball Without Borders Global Camp in New Orleans as a representative of Australia.
Armato will have to sit out the 2020-21 season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have two remaining years of eligibility starting in 2021-22.
