Beach Volleyball Heads to Deland for Stetson Beach Blast

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team will play in its most competitive tournament to date in program history this weekend, March 14-15, at the Stetson Beach Blast in Deland, Fla.
The Blazers (5-4, 2-3 CCSA) play No. 4 Hawaii and No. 11 Stetson on Saturday, followed by No. 3 Florida State and No. 6 USC on Sunday. All four of UAB's opponents made the NCAA National Championship a year ago and USC finished as the national runner up.
At the conclusion of this weekend, UAB will have played six straight nationally ranked opponents, including four of the top six teams in the country.
Freshman Abbey Thorup leads the Blazers with a 7-2 overall record. She and teammate Emma Andraka defeated No. 16 TCU last weekend en route to a 2-1 record in Fort Worth. Thorup and Andraka have seen action on Courts 1-3 but have settled into Court 2 recently.
Senior Kenley Adams continues to inch closer to the program record for career victories. Adams now has 48 wins and is five away from moving into first place on the career wins list (Tressa Buckland – 52). Adams as played every match this season on Court 1.
Following this weekend at Stetson, UAB heads to Gulf Shores to host the second annual March to May. In what serves as a preview of the NCAA National Championship which UAB hosts, the Blazers will play No. 14 South Carolina, Tulane, No. 18 Georgia State, No. 12 Florida Atlantic and Southern Miss.
