FRISCO, Texas – The fifth seed UAB women's basketball team is set to face 12-seed Louisiana Tech for the first round of the C-USA Basketball Championship on Wednesday morning at 11:30 a.m. at Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas.
UAB (20-10, 12-6 C-USA) finished the regular season strong with three straight wins including an overtime win at Old Dominion, to give the Lady Monarchs their first home loss of the season. The Blazers are the only team to defeat ODU twice this season. The Green and Gold then capped off the regular season at home with a 44-point victory over Southern Miss, the largest margin of victory over the Golden Eagles in program history. The win over Southern Miss was also the 20th of the season, marking the first time in UAB history the Blazers have had three straight 20 win seasons.
Seniors Rachael Childress and Miyah Barnes were named All-Conference USA First and Second team on Monday morning by the league office. Childress received First Team honors for the third time in her career after earning Freshman of the Year and All-Freshman Team honors in her rookie season. Barnes received Second Team honors for the third time in her career, she was also named to the All-Freshman Team in 2016-17. The two seniors lead UAB in scoring, Childress' 16.7 points per game is fourth best in C-USA, while Barnes 12.5 points per game is top-20 in the league and her 3.5 assists per game are sixth best.
The Blazers senior class is the most successful in program history with 88 wins including 45 conference wins.
Louisiana Tech (14-15, 6-12 C-USA) is led by junior guard Amber Dixon averaging 12.2 points per game. The Lady Techsters boast C-USA Sixth Player of the Year, Raizel Guinto, who has a team leading 47 steals and a second best 82 assists and 11 blocks while averaging 8.8 points off the bench.
"We are excited to be at the conference tournament this week in Frisco," said head coach Randy Norton. "Conference USA puts together a great tournament and our girls are looking forward to another opportunity to take the floor together in the post season."
The two teams met earlier this season in Ruston, La., a game which UAB won 71-51 after holding the Lady Techsters to just six points in the final 10 minutes of play. UAB saw five different Blazers score in double figures with Childress and Trista Magee leading the way with 15 points each. Barnes (13p), Imani Johnson (11p) and Zakyia Weathersby (10p) helped the Blazers shoot 51.1 percent on the game including 70.0 percent shooting in the third to take a commanding lead over Louisiana Tech.
Tipoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Court B at the Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. The winner of the matchup will go on to face the four seed Middle Tennessee on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. on Court B.
