BIRMINGHAM – Now in his third year with the UAB men's golf program, Austin Cody has been promoted to Associate Head Coach, announced by Head Coach Mike Wilson on Thursday.
Since Cody's arrival at UAB, the Blazers have carried on their tremendous success, which includes cracking the golfstat.com Top 25 on Oct. 16, 2019 when UAB checked in at No. 25; its highest national ranking since 2013.
"Austin is one of the best young coaches in the nation and his future is tremendously bright," Wilson said. "His knowledge and passion for the game of golf is incredibly high and he is well respected not only by our players, but by everyone in the golf community. Austin has earned this promotion and we are excited to pick up where we left off in the fall with a team that can compete for national prominence."
In Cody's first year, he helped the Blazers finish first in stroke play at the Conference USA Championship. R.J. Keur would then go on to represent the Blazers in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional. In each of Cody's first two years, UAB has been the top ranked C-USA team.
Cody has also been instrumental in the development of William Walker III, who is in his senior year in 2020 and was a First Team All-Conference USA Selection in 2019. Walker III currently owns a 70.2 season stroke average entering spring competition, and for his career has a 72.74 stroke average.
In Cody's two+ year at UAB, the Blazers have earned three All-Conference USA accolades, which includes two First Team selections (Keur, 2018, Walker III, 2019) and one All-Freshman honoree (John Snoddy, 2019).
Cody is a 2014 graduate of Duke University where he was a four year letterwinner on the men's golf team (2010-2014). In 115 total rounds, Cody notched 22 under-par showings and picked up 14 career top-20 finishes. His best individual performance came in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate when he finished in second place, helping Duke to a first place team finish. Additionally, he was an integral member of the 2013 Blue Devils team that won the ACC championship.
Also impressive in the classroom, Cody was a three-time ACC All-Academic team honoree, majoring in sociology and minoring in markets and management studies.
Cody and the Blazers played to an overall record of 48-20-0 in the fall. They open the spring slate this coming weekend, Feb. 10-11, at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate hosted by South Alabama.
