Floyd Medals for UAB Track and Field on Day One of C-USA Championships

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team completed a successful day one of hosting the 2020 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday as junior Brittany Floyd led the way, placing second in the pentathlon.
Floyd had an impactful performance across the board for her silver in the pentathlon, finishing first in the long jump and second in both the 60-meter hurdles and 800-meter run. The Columbus, Ga., native also notched a personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.10 seconds and the 800-meter run at 2:23.04. Fellow pent athlete Miren Ederra also placed well in her own right, finishing fifth overall and setting personal marks in each event outside of the 60-meter hurdles.
Freshman Makiyah Sills also had a good day, placing third in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries in 8.69 seconds to advance to the finals. In the 800-meter run, redshirt junior Celestial Moon will be representing the Blazers in the finals after timing out a 2:13.96 in the event. The remaining UAB qualifier was senior Serena Martinez, who hit a personal record 5:02.80 to place eighth and move on to the finals.
As a unit, the Blazers' distance medley team of Moon, junior Bethan Evans, sophomore Jabriana Jemison and Martinez also turned in a solid performance to earn bronze with a final time of 12:04.27.
UAB will wrap up the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Things will get going at 9 a.m. with the men's 60-meter hurdles as part of the heptathlon.. Meet information and coverage for the event is provided on the UAB track and field schedule page.
