UAB Women's Basketball Hosts Mercer Thursday Night

The UAB women's basketball team is eyeing a 3-0 start to the season when it hosts Mercer on Thursday night at Bartow Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
The Blazers' last game was a 78-58 road victory at Chattanooga on Dec. 6, their second straight win by 20-plus points.
This will be the first time UAB has played Mercer since Dec. 20, 1998.
Scouting Mercer
The Bears (2-2) are coming off a 78-25 home win over Covenant on Dec. 5, their biggest margin of victory this season.
Mercer leads the SoCon in scoring offense, assists, steals and defensive rebounds, and average more than 69 points per contest.
UAB Lately
Going into Thursday's matchup, the Blazers have outscored their opponents by a combined 43 points.
Junior guard Claudia Armato, a transfer from Southern Utah, has been a spark offensively for UAB and leads the team with 13 assists.
On the defensive end, LaMiracle Sims and Sara Rosenfeldt have been stepping up and racking up boards.
Rosenfeldt already has 11 defensive rebounds while Sims has 10.
The team is shooting 41.3 percent from the field and 38.8 from behind the arc.
White-Hot Whitley
Junior guard Margaret Whitley has started the season off hot, with career performances in each of the first two games.
Whitley, who was named C-USA Player of the Week on Dec. 7, had 34 points against the Mocs, shooting 53.3%(8-of-15) from the field, 5-of-8 from 3-point range, 13-of-14 from the line, with three rebounds and three assists
She leads UAB and C-USA in scoring, averaging 28.5 per contest, 3-point field goals per game average (4.5) and field goal percentage (.577).
The Geneva, Ill., native is the first UAB player to post 30 or more points in a game since Zakyia Weathersby posted 30 against Tuskegee on Dec. 30, 2019.
