CHATTANOOGA - It was raining three-pointers in Tennessee on Sunday afternoon as UAB's women's basketball team earned a 78-58 victory on the road over Chattanooga (0-1).
The team now improves to 2-0 on the season.
Five different Blazers combined to make 11 shots from behind the arc, including five from junior Margaret Whitley.
Whitley led the team with 34 points, a new-career record.
She shot 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the field, 5-of-8 from 3-point range and 13-of-14 from the line. This is the second game in a row where the guard has scored at least 27 points.
The Blazers started the game off slow, with the Mocs going up 5-0 early.
Whitley took control of the game after that, scoring eight of the team's 12 points in the first quarter.
She sunk two back-to-back threes to start off the second, before junior Sara Rosenfeldt drew two fouls. She earned her first three points of the game at the line.
Rosenfeldt finished with five rebounds, four on the defensive end.
The Blazers went into the half down 25-23 but didn't trail for much longer after.
UAB went on an offensive tear, scoring 55 points in the last 20 minutes.
As a team, the Blazers shot 39.3 percent from the field (22 of 56) and made 11 of 22 of their three-point shots in the game.
Junior LaMiracle Sims led the team with eight rebounds to go along with nine points, while teammate Claudia Armato had a team-high five assists.
This matches UAB's biggest margin of victory over the Mocs. The Blazers also won by 20 points on Dec. 20, 1989.
"Today's game was fun," Whitley said. "At halftime, we came out ready to play as one and get a W. I thought we played as a team in the second half and we were able to extend it. We wanted that first road win badly."
With this win, coach Randy Norton became the second winningest coach in UAB women's basketball program history. He now has 139 Blazer wins, surpassing former UAB coach Audra Smith (138-138).
Jeannie Milling, who coached UAB from 1987-2004, holds the record with 265 wins.
