UAB Hosts North Texas Series To Open C-USA Play

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB women's basketball team will play for the first time in 13 days when they host North Texas in back-to-back games to open Conference USA play on Friday and Saturday afternoon.
Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. for both games in Bartow Arena.
UAB LATELY
The Blazers (5-1, 0-0 C-USA) enter the matchup against the Mean Green on a three-game winning streak.
UAB has not played since Dec. 19 at the Hatter Classic in Deland, Fla. During their stay in Florida, the team went 2-0, recording a 49-48 win over Stetson and a 81-73 win over Abilene Christian.
The Blazers' scheduled game against Tennessee State on Dec. 22 was canceled due to COVID within the Tigers' program.
STING LIKE A WEATHERSBY
Last season, in her first year as a Blazer, Zakyia Weathersby recorded one double-double.
Through just the first six games this season, the senior already has three double-doubles and missed a fourth by just one point on the road at Stetson, when she had a career-best 18 boards and nine points.
She leads C-USA in rebounding and defensive rebounds (47) and has posted a conference-high four double-digit rebounding games.
TOP OF THE CLASS
Margaret Whitley has been leading UAB offensively, scoring in double digits in every game this season.
The junior is second in scoring in C-USA, averaging 22 points a matchup.
She has also already hit a conference-high 19 3-pointers, averaging 41.3 percent (19 of 46) from behind the arc.
FROM THE LINE
The Blazers have been clutch from the line this season, leading C-USA in free throw percentage at 76.1 percent (102 of 134).
Whitley leads the league in the category, making 90.4 percent (47 of 52) of her free throws this season.
PERSISTENT ASSISTANTS
Junior Claudia Armato and freshman Caitlynn Daniels have been racking up assists for UAB.
Armato has a team-high 25, while Daniels follows with 20.
They rank tenth and eleventh, respectively, in the category in C-USA.
SCOUTING NORTH TEXAS
The Mean Green (3-2) enter the series coming off an 82-68 loss vs. Oklahoma State on Dec. 22.
This season, they have recorded wins over Tarleton, Louisiana and UT Arlington.
The team's leading scorer is redshirt sophomore Quincy Noble, who is averaging over 19 points a game. She had a career-high 30-point performance in UNT's win over Louisiana on Dec. 4.
UAB has won the last four matchups over UNT, dating back to Jan. 20, 2018.
