Former Blazer Whitlock Selected by Red Sox in Rule 5 Draft

BIRMINGHAM — Former UAB Blazer right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock was selected No. 4 overall by the Boston Red Sox in the MLB phase of the Rule 5 Draft Thursday morning.
Whitlock was selected in the 18th round by the New York Yankees in the 2017 MLB Draft. He posted a 3.07 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 70.1 innings at Double-A Trenton in 2019.
Teams that add a player in the Rule 5 Draft must pay $100,000 to the club that acquired him from. The drafted player must then stay on his new team's 25-man roster for the entirety of the next season. To be removed from the roster, he must be placed on outright waivers and he's also subject to being offered back to his previous team for $50,000.
In his two seasons with the Blazers, Whitlock was a consistent force on the mound. Over 42 appearances and eight starts, he posted a 3.52 ERA in 110.1 innings pitches. Whitlock was tabbed as the 2017 Opening Day starter and earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for his performance.
