Shayne Carnes Named to UAB Hall of Fame Class of 2020

BIRMINGHAM – Shayne Carnes has been named to the UAB Hall of Fame Class of 2020. Carnes is the first UAB baseball player inducted into the Hall of Fame.
A native of Birmingham, Carnes began his career with the Blazers in 1995 playing first base and outfield.
Carnes had a breakout season his senior year in 1998. He broke the record for most runs batted in with 87 including 23 home runs. That year, he slugged the fourth best batting average in program history (.417) with 88 hits which tied him for third most in a season.
In his final season, he recorded the most runs batted in and home runs in a single game. Carnes hit three home runs with 10 RBIs in a game against Alabama State.
Throughout his four years, Carnes' playing accomplishments are better displayed in his record-breaking career. In his career, he had 306 hits which puts him first in program history. The 306 hits helped Carnes have the second-best batting average (.381) in program history. Over his playing career, Carnes broke the career record of runs batted in with 213 and had the best slugging percentage (.647).
His career record does not stop there. Carnes also had a good eye at the plate. He is fifth all-time in walks (107) and second in on-base percentage (.455).
Through all of his hard-work and playing achievements, Carnes received numerous honors and awards. He was named All-American in 1998 by three different publications including Louisville Slugger. Carnes was named First Team All-Conference USA in 1998 and All-Great Midwest Team in 1995.
Upon graduation, Carnes was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 24th round of the 1998 MLB June Amateur Draft. Carnes played in 172 games in two seasons at the Single-A level. He batted an average of .291 in his two seasons in the minors.
Carnes is the third inductee named to the five-member class of 2020. The remaining Hall of Famers will be released one-by-one throughout the week.
