BIRMINGHAM — With four weeks until tip-off on Nov. 25, UAB Women's Basketball head coach Randy Norton has announced the 2020-21 schedule. The nonconference slate features six total games, four at home and two true road games.
"Scheduling has obviously been challenging for everyone this year," said Norton. "We are just grateful to have completed our schedule and to be on the court again.
"Our team's goal for this season is no different than any other year, that's to pursue championships in the classroom, on the court and out in the community with each of us doing our best every day."
To start the regular season, the Blazers will open up at home with a game against Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 25. Under Coach Norton, the Blazers are 7-0 in home openers.
"We had to drop four games as well as our two exhibition games. With that being said, we have seven new players so we will have to think outside the box on how to prepare them for the upcoming season," added Norton.
On Dec. 3 the Blazers take on Alabama State at home. UAB leads the all-time series 5-0 against the Hornets.
The Blazers' first road game of the season is at Chattanooga on Dec. 6. In the last meeting between the teams in 2018, UAB won the contest 60-50 at home in the first round of the WNIT.
UAB will be back in action at Bartow Arena on Dec. 13 against Grambling State.
The Green and Gold then travels to DeLand, Fla. for the Stetson Tournament Dec. 18-19. In the first contest of the event, UAB will take on host institution Stetson. UAB is 2-0 in all-time matchups, with the last meeting coming in 2008. The second game of the tournament on Dec. 19 is TBD.
UAB will conclude the nonconference schedule at home versus Tennessee State on Dec. 22. The two teams have met one time back in 2012 that resulted in a 68-60 win for the Blazers at home.
Conference USA made adjustments to the regular season schedule on Oct. 20. This season, the league will move to an 18-game regular season format that focuses on the health and safety of student-athletes.
In this format, schools will play two games per visit at four selected C-USA schools and host four selected teams for a two-game series, while playing a rival opponent one time home and away.
"Conference USA will be very competitive once again and it will be interesting to see how the new format goes for this year," said Norton.
With the adjusted format, the Blazers begin conference play on Dec. 31 as they take on North Texas in Bartow Arena. UAB will then turn around and play UNT again on Jan. 2.
UAB's first conference road games will be on Jan. 7 and 9 as they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. for two contests versus Southern Miss. The Blazers lead the all-time series 40-25.
The Blazers return home to face with Charlotte on Jan. 14 and 16.
One of the most anticipated matchups of the season will come on Jan. 21 and 23 when UAB travels to Houston to face the 2019 C-USA Regular Season Champions, Rice. The Blazers have the overall series lead 10-8 but are 3-4 on the road versus the Owls.
Rice lost two-time Conference USA Player of the Year, Erika Ogwumike, to graduation and the WNBA Draft, but return four starters.
The home and away contest will be against rival Middle Tennessee. UAB hosts the Blue Raiders Thursday, Jan. 28 before traveling to Murfreesboro on Jan. 30.
The Blazers will travel back to Texas for two matchups against UTEP on Feb. 4 and 6 before returning home Feb. 11 and 13 against Louisiana Tech.
On Feb. 18 and 20 UAB makes its final road trip of the regular season as the Blazers head to Norfolk, Va. for games against Old Dominion. The Monarchs had the most victories of any C-USA team last season (24) and finished 14-4 in league play. UAB swept the two-game series last season, including a 64-61 overtime win in Norfolk.
UAB hosts UTSA on Feb. 25 and 27 to close out the regular season. The Blazers swept the series last season while holding the Roadrunners to under 55 points each game.
The 2021 Conference USA Tournament will take place in Frisco, Texas at the Ford Center at the Star March 10-13. The top 12 regular season finishers in conference play will qualify for the Championship.
