BIRMINGHAM – Despite the women's basketball season start date being pushed to November 25, there is much to be excited about in Birmingham as the UAB women's basketball team welcomes seven newcomers to the roster for the 2020-21 season. UABSports.com continues to introduce you to the new Blazers and provide unique opportunities to get to know these new faces.
Today's 'Meet the Blazers' profile features a junior transfer from Jones College, LaMiracle Sims.
The Sims File
Number: 12
Position: Forward
Height: 6-1
Hometown: Moss Point, Miss.
When did you start playing basketball and why?
LS: "When I was in the seventh grade. When I was in middle school the coaches came up to me because I was tall and said I should play, and I ended up loving it. I started really having a passion for it as the years progressed."
Do you have a favorite basketball player? If so, who?
LS: "I really like LeBron James and what he brings and how he asserts himself. On the women's side I like Brittney Griner, Maya Moore, Candace Parker and A'ja Wilson."
What is your favorite basketball memory?
LS: "The night I scored my 1,000th point and got my 1,000th rebound in high school. It happened on Senior Night and we beat our rival. It was an amazing night."
Did you play any other sports growing up? If so, which ones?
LS: "Nope. Just basketball."
Why do you wear number 12?
LS: "I actually got 12 this year because 21 is normally my number and it wasn't available. I figured if you flip the 21 it would work. It is still one and two on me."
Why did you choose UAB?
LS: "When I came on my visit the family atmosphere made it. I was like, 'this is the place I want to be.' I am really big on family. It was almost the same atmosphere as Jones (College), it is just like a bigger version of it, it has the same feeling. It wasn't a hard transition at all."
Do you have any siblings? If so, what are their names and how old are they?
LS: "My older brother, Toussaint, we called him Diamond, he passed away, he was 28. I have a younger brother, Henry that is nine and a younger sister Princess, that is eight. My little brother and sister really look up to me, they play basketball and try to do everything I do."
Do you have any pets? If so, what kind and what are their name(s)?
LS: "No pets, I am allergic to dogs."
Who is your biggest inspiration?
LS: "I would say God. Everything I have encountered in my life; in the moment I think there's no way I can get out of it, but I always overcome it. When I say God, I also mean my faith and belief in myself."
Do you remember what you wanted to be when you grew up?
LS: "A doctor."
What do you want to be now?
LS: "I want to be a nurse practitioner that specializes in mental health. I think it's a big sector of society nowadays and there is a stigma around it, but I want to help with that."
What are you majoring in?
LS: "Medical sociology with a minor in psychology."
What did you do during quarantine?
LS: "I spent a lot of time with my brother and sister. We would go outside and stay active as much as possible. We have some four-wheelers so we would ride around on those a lot. I hung out with my family. At first, I was dreading quarantine because I wanted to be at school but eventually, I liked it because I had time to introspect."
What is your favorite TV show to binge watch?
LS: "I don't really watch TV that much. I am still a kid at heart though, so I like cartoons. SpongeBob is my favorite."
What do you like to do in your free time?
LS: "Hang out around good spirited people with genuine vibes. I also like to shop for clothes. I haven't done too much online shopping during quarantine. I have put a lot of stuff in the cart, but I haven't bought it."
Who is one artist you want to see in concert the most?
LS: "I haven't really thought about that, but I would like to see Teyana Taylor."
If you could have any actress play you in a movie about your life who would it be?
LS: "Teyana Taylor, again."
What is your favorite meal/food?
LS: "Soul food, pork chops specifically."
Do you have a hidden talent?
LS: "Singing. I have so much anxiety though I get nervous to sing. Hopefully I grow out of it though and embrace it, I used to record."
What are you looking forward to most in your first basketball season at UAB?
LS: "I'm looking forward to winning this season and giving all that I have to ensure that. I came from a winning program and that's what I'm destined to continue to do. We will win a championship this year!"
