UAB Opens Decade Hosting Blazer and Vulcan Invitationals

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team will kick off the new year by hosting a pair of meets at the Birmingham CrossPlex over the weekend with the Blazer Invitational on Friday and the Vulcan Invitational on Saturday. Both annual events will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's shot put.
The lineup for the ninth annual Blazer Invitational includes SEC opponents Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss and Mississippi State along with Conference USA opponents FIU, Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss, among others. FIU and Florida Atlantic will compete in the fifth annual Vulcan Invitational as well, along with South Florida and Troy to name a few.
The meets will be the second and third days of competition for the Blazers as they opened the indoor season at the BSC Panther Ice Breaker. UAB earned seven top-five finishes at the meet as junior Anna Massa claimed gold in the pole vault, and the team of Lisa Petkov, Karri Green, Marielle Lewis and Ebony Tolliver took home the gold in the 4x400m relay.
Next up, the Blazers will stay in town to compete at the Samford Multi on Jan. 16 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. UAB will hit the road the next day to wrap up the weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational Jan. 17-18 in Nashville, Tenn. Meet information and coverage for each will be provided on the UAB track and field schedule page.
Tickets for all UAB track and field events at the Birmingham Crossplex are sold at the doors at a rate of $5 per adult and $3 per youth.
