UAB Drops Home Opener by a Score of 3-2

BIRMINGHAM- UAB men's soccer dropped its home opener Friday night against Mercer by a score of 3-2. Sophomore midfielder Blake White scored both of the Blazers goals.
"I thought Blake did a great job on both sides of the ball," said UAB head coach Jeff Kinney. "The attack is something he brings to the table for us. He caused their back four some issues and had two good finishes."
The Blazers scored first in the 16thminute after Nathaniel St. Louis fed a cross from Kevin Wallace to White who sent the ball in the back of the net. Just over a minute later Trevor Martineau scored the equalizer for Mercer.
Just before the half the Bears had an opportunity to take the lead after a Mercer player was fouled inside the box setting up a penalty kick. UAB goalkeeper Seth Torman made the clutch save to keep the score 1-1 going into halftime.
In the second half, Mercer found its first lead of the night off Martineau's second goal in the 51stminute. In the 79thminute White got loose in the box, weaving between defenders before sending the ball in the net to draw the score level again.
The Bears would find the game winner just a minute later after a poorly cleared ball set up a Mercer goal from Roberto Arteaga.
"Going in we knew Mercer was going to be a good team," added Kinney. "A little disappointed in how we gave up our goals so quickly after scoring, it really took the wind out of our sails. We have yet to complete a full 90 minute game, but all we can do is keep focusing on doing the little things better and hopefully that leads to the right result on Sunday."
UAB will be back at BBVA Field Sunday at noon against Milwaukee to continue the Soccer for a Cure classic.
