Rifle Wins Season-Opening Match at Georgia Southern

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB rifle team took first place in dominating fashion in Statesboro, Ga. on Saturday, recording the highest score in air rifle and smallbore.
"I am very proud of our performance today," said head coach Lori Goodwin. "All of our shooters performed very well and we took major steps forward for the rest of the season. I'm excited about the remainder of our competitions."
The Blazers shot 2234 in smallbore and 2316 in air rifle for an aggregate score of 4550. UAB topped Georgia Southern, who shot 4453 aggregate, and Wofford, who shot 4449 aggregate.
UAB also had the top three overall individual performers, as Sophia Flores claimed first place by firing 562 in smallbore and 580 in air rifle for an aggregate score of 1142. Jordan Blankenship finished directly behind Flores in second place, shooting 555 in smallbore and 581 in air rifle for an aggregate total of 1136.
Freshman Amy Kohan tied for second in her first collegiate event with an aggregate score of 1136, while also claiming the top smallbore spot with a 564. Kohan shot a 572 in air rifle competeition.
Senior captain Lilly Vonderau took home gold in air rifle, shooting a 583.
