BIRMINGHAM- The countdown begins to the 2019-20 women's basketball season as the first official practice is just days away.
UAB has put together consecutive 25+ win seasons and is looking forward to a third this year. The Blazers return 11 players from last year's squad, but there are four new faces that could help bring the Green and Gold back to the top of the Conference USA standings.
Over the next week, fans will get the chance to learn about these new Blazers in a segment called Blazer Buzz. Our final segment features freshman forward, Jasmine Gracie.
Gracie comes to Birmingham after a stellar career at Madison Academy in Madison, Ala. During her high school career, she helped lead the Mustangs to 108-22 record including two State Championships in three State Finals appearances. Gracie averaged 10.7 points and seven rebounds a game in her career and was named was named All State Honorable Mention in her sophomore season.
"Winning state for the first time my sophomore year was special," said Gracie. "We won the year after that too, but the first time was cool because we beat a team that had a two-year winning streak."
Her goal wasn't always to play college basketball, at first, she just wanted to make some more friends.
"I started playing basketball in middle school because I wanted to be popular."
She started taking the sport more seriously after she made the eighth-grade team as a seventh grader.
"That is when I fell in love with the game and things got really serious for me."
The Huntsville, Ala. native chose to continue her basketball career at UAB because it felt like home to her. She got along with the players instantly and loved the coaching staff's commitment to their faith, something she holds dearly herself.
On the academic side, Gracie was excited about UAB's Department of Physical Therapy. After tearing her ACL, she found an interest in the rehabilitation process and decided she wanted to help others who face similar injuries.
"Growing up I had no idea what I wanted to be," said Gracie. "My dad said I should be an engineer because I am good at math. But after I tore my ACL, I saw what physical therapists did for me and I thought it was really cool. While the PT worked on me, I would ask them what they were doing and what things were."
Outside of basketball Gracie enjoys catching up on The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars and The 100 on Netflix. She likes to go out around town and go shopping or try new places to eat.
As for hidden talents, Gracie claims to be a pretty solid dancer.
"I can dance pretty well. I will bust a move, if there is music playing, I will break out in dance."
