Blazer Buzz: Summer Schloss

BIRMINGHAM- The countdown begins to the 2019-20 women's basketball season as the first official practice is less than a week away.
UAB has put together consecutive 25+ win seasons and is looking forward to a third this year. The Blazers return 11 players from last year's squad, but there are four new faces that could help bring the Green and Gold back to the top of the Conference USA standings.
Over the next week, fans will get the chance to learn about these new Blazers in a segment called Blazer Buzz. This week features freshman forward, Summer Schloss.
Schloss joins the Blazer freshman class from Gastonia N.C. where she played high school basketball at Ashbrook High School. In high school, Schloss averaged a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds a game. She tallied 1,000 career rebounds and was third in the state in rebounds. Schloss earned Conference Player of the Year honors and was a two-time All-Conference First Team member.
On the court Schloss models her game off of Kobe Bryant, her favorite athlete. She also cites Angel McCoughtry, Maya Moore and Napheesa Collier as some of her basketball idols.
Though Schloss has played basketball for fun since she was seven, she was in seventh grade when she officially started playing organized basketball after the father of one of the neighborhood kids she used to play with convinced her mom into letting her play on their AAU team.
In addition to basketball she also played volleyball and track in high school. As a member of the track team she competed in discus, shotput and ran the 800. She made the State Championships for throwing.
Schloss names her mother as her biggest inspiration.
"My mom is basically superwoman," Schloss said. "She had to balance a big family and sometimes she didn't always have it, but she made sure we had what we needed. AAU was not cheap; basketball was not cheap, but she always said it was an investment. She invested in us because she knew we were going to have a bright future. Just seeing her doing that for us and pushing through all those things it showed me that I could do it. Sometimes it gives me that nit and grit to help me get through."
Family is important to Schloss which is one of the main reasons she chose UAB. The freshman forward loved the family feel of the program and the fact that Coach Norton was honest with her.
"The coaches are so straight up with you," said Schloss. "Some places aren't always honest, but Coach Norton told you it is going to be this way and we have this kind of culture and I loved that atmosphere and culture."
Schloss isn't just talented on the court. Off the court she has a not so hidden talent for singing.
"Coach Norton knows I can sing, and he let the whole team know. He had me sing to the team on my visit."
Schloss is studying biology with the hopes of becoming a pediatrician or a cardiologist. She loves science and foreign language. After taking AP Spanish in high school she got to test her Spanish out on the team's trip to Spain this summer. She has even recruited the help of one of her teammates to help her get better.
"Angela (Vendrell) and I speak Spanish together sometimes," Schloss said in reference to the senior from Alicante, Spain. "I like to practice with her."
