BIRMINGHAM- The countdown begins to the 2019-20 women's basketball season as the first official practice is a week away.
UAB has put together consecutive 25+ win seasons and is looking forward to a third this year. The Blazers return 11 players from last year's squad, but there are four new faces that could help bring the Green and Gold back to the top of the Conference USA standings.
Over the next week, fans will get the chance to learn about these new Blazers in a segment called Blazer Buzz. This week features junior center Zakyia Weathersby.
Weathersby comes to Birmingham with two years of eligibility from Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Miss. During her time at JCJC, Weathersby averaged 10.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. She helped lead the Bobcats to state, district, and regional championships in 2019 and was named an All-MACJC South Division second team honoree.
The Collins, Miss. native did not pick up a basketball until she was 14 after her middle school coach approached her about playing for him. She had never played sports before but decided to give basketball a try.
"My coach asked if I was going to play basketball and I just said 'okay'," said Weathersby. "I didn't play any other sports until I played basketball. I don't really watch sports either, but I do like LeBron."
After Weathersby graduated from Jones County, she chose UAB to continue her education and playing career because the atmosphere felt like home.
"It's a great place," Weathersby said. "The people are great, it is a good environment, and it reminded me of home a little, which is only three hours away."
Collins is a small town 30 miles northwest of Hattiesburg and 60 miles southeast of Jackson. Weathersby described her hometown as peaceful and is sure to have a cheering section when the Blazers play at Southern Miss in January.
In her free time, Weathersby enjoys listening to music, watching Netflix (she is currently watching The 100), reading and catching up on sleep.
When asked about the one thing she could not live without, Weathersby replied 'food' and, like a true Mississippian, her favorite food is seafood.
"I love seafood. Crawfish, shrimp, crab legs all of it."
