NORFOLK, Va.- The UAB men's soccer team opened Conference USA play with a 1-1 draw against Old Dominion on Saturday night.
After another slow start the Blazers used a second half goal by Blake White to force overtime for the third time this season.
Old Dominion (0-3-1, 0-0-1) tallied the first goal of the game in the 25thminute from freshman Simon Falck.
UAB (1-3-1, 0-0-1) would not have an answer for the Monarchs in the first half going into the locker room down one. The Blazers were outshot 6-1 in the half.
Twelve minutes into the second half a hard slide tackle on Brandon Core sent Falck off with red card giving UAB a man advantage for the remainder of the game. The advantage would prove valuable for the Blazers. In the 73rdminute White dribbled around three ODU defenders to net his fourth goal of the season to equalize for UAB.
After 90 minutes of play the score remained knotted at 1-1. In the 96thminute of the first overtime Chase Rushing would find some space but his shot landed just wide of the net.
The Monarchs and Blazers each put up two shots in the second overtime period but neither team was able to find the game winner. UAB moves to 1-1-1 in overtime games this season.
"I was pleased with the way we fought back into the match," said head coach Jeff Kinney. "I have to give credit to ODU for defending well after going down a man. I don't think we made them work hard enough. We have a number of things we need to improve on in order to get a better result against Charlotte."
The Blazers will return to action next Saturday night at BBVA Field when No. 12 Charlotte visits Birmingham. The game will kick off at 7 p.m.
