BIRMINGHAM – Less than a month after being selected to the 2019 Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), the UAB women's basketball team learned that it will face long-time foe South Alabama in the first round. Tip off between the Blazers and Jaguars is set for 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 from the friendly confines of Bartow Arena.
UAB and South Alabama are no strangers to each other, having met 44 times before with the Green and Gold leading the series 27-17.
"We have had some great games with South Alabama over the years," head coach Randy Norton said. "They had an outstanding season last year and return all five starters. I have always believed that in-state games are extremely important, and we are excited to be hosting the first game of the tournament inside Bartow Arena."
The Blazers are coming off of a 26-7 record and second place finish in Conference USA, advancing to the second round of the WNIT for the second consecutive season. The 2018-19 campaign saw records continue to be broken as UAB set program bests in 3-point field goals made (291) and triples attempted (811), while shooting the third best mark from beyond the arc (35.9 percent) in school history.
UAB returns four starters from last year's squad, including All C-USA performer Rachael Childress. The Moulton, Ala. native set school records for 3-pointers made in a season (110) and 3-point field goals attempted (265) and enters her final season on the Southside needing eight 3-pointers to set the UAB record for most career triples.
South Alabama went 25-11 last season and also advanced to the second round of the WNIT before falling to Wyoming.
Antoinette Lewis led a trio of Jaguars to average double figure points, netting 14.9 points per game. Lewis was an All-Sun Belt First Team member and earned three league player of the week honors as she had 24 double digit scoring performances.
Ticket packages and prices will be released at a later date.
