BIRMINGHAM – Coming off of consecutive Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) second round appearances, the UAB women's basketball team has been one of 16 teams selected to compete in the 2019 Preseason WNIT, Triple Crown Sports announced on Thursday.
The selection marks just the third time in program history that UAB has been chosen for the event with the other two appearances coming during the 1999-00 and 2011-12 seasons.
"We are honored to be one of the 16 teams invited to play in the Preseason WNIT," head coach Randy Norton said. "We will have the opportunity to play several games against outstanding teams which gives us a postseason feel early in the season."
The Blazers are in the midst of the most successful two-year run in program history, amassing a 54-14 record over two seasons, including a Conference USA Regular Season Title and a second place finish this past season.
UAB returns 11 letterwinners, including four starters from the 2018-19 squad that set program bests in 3-pointers (291) and finished the season ranked in the top-15 nationally in eight categories, including three within the top-five.
Among the returning starters are All-C-USA performers Rachael Childress and Miyah Barnes. Childress was a First Team selection and paced the Blazers in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per contest and set the school record for 3-pointers made in a season (110). Barnes, a Second Team honoree, dished out 158 assists, good for the fifth most in a single season in program history. The Memphis, Tenn., native enters her final tenure nine points shy of joining the 1,000-poing scorers club.
All 16 teams competing are guaranteed three games with first and second round matchups to be announced later this year. All games are hosted by participating schools, with the championship game televised on CBS Sports Network.
The field features 12 teams who reached the post season in 2018-19 and five who played in the NCAA Tournament.
