UAB Resumes Conference USA Action in Miami

BIRMINGHAM – After a mid-week game victory over Alabama State, the UAB baseball team returns to Conference USA play on Friday when it travels to Miami to face FIU. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m. CST, followed by game two on Saturday at 5 p.m. CST with the series finale slated for Sunday at 10 a.m. CST.
The Blazers downed Alabama State 12-9 on Wednesday night at Young Memorial to wrap up an eight-game homestand. Ian Ladner homered in the victory, marking the fourth consecutive game the designated hitter and has a launched a ball over the fence. The Brandon, Miss., native is batting an impressive .667 with eight runs on eight hits, including four home runs in his last five games and enters the weekend on a five-game hitting streak.
Nathan Anthes has also stepped up big as of late, playing in place of J Paul Fullerton who has missed the last 19 games with an injury. Anthes is batting a team-best .375 with six hits, six RBI, a pair of runs scored and two doubles in his last 10 games.
Riley Davis (4-1, 5.32 ERA) is scheduled to get the start on the mound to begin the series on Friday, followed by Tyler Gates (2-0, 4.55 ERA) on Saturday, while Tanner Graham (3-4, 5.29) will toss the series finale in Miami on Sunday.
FIU (19-25, 8-12 Conference USA) is coming off of a 2-0 Wednesday night victory over Bethune Cookman. The Panthers hold a two-game lead over the Blazers in the C-USA standings as both teams are vying for the one of the eight spots in the Conference USA Tournament in Biloxi at the end of the month.
Austin Shenton leads the FIU offense, batting .333 with 29 runs scored on 55 hits, including nine doubles, two triples and seven home runs.
One of the better pitching staffs in the league, the Panthers are scheduled to start Logan Allen (4-4, 2.70 ERA) on Friday, followed by Nick McDonald (3-3, 3.92 ERA) on Saturday and Franco Aleman (2-4, 3.62) on Sunday.
