UAB Advances to Match Play Semifinals at C-USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. – Needing to make par on 18 to avoid a one-hole playoff with Rice, redshirt junior William Walker III stuck his approach shot within 12 feet of the pin and two-putted to send the UAB men's golf team into the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship at Texarkana Country Club.
The Blazers had clutch performances down the stretch of stroke play and are now one of four teams that will compete in the semifinals of match play on Wednesday. UAB earned the 4-seed and will face top-seeded UTSA head-to-head. The other semifinal consists of No. 2 Middle Tennessee versus No. 3 Charlotte.
UAB fell to as low as sixth place with less than nine holes to play, but had huge performances down the stretch to advance into the semis. Walker III was three under in his final seven holes, while John Snoddy birdied 16 and 17 to help gain separation from Rice and WKU. Nick Robillard also played even par for his final eight holes, which included making a lengthy put on 18.
"I'm very pleased with the mental toughness our team showed down the stretch," said head coach Mike Wilson. "We were faced with adversity and we handled it with poise and composure. Tomorrow is going to be a battle but we like our chances and are excited to be competing for the conference title."
Walker III placed sixth overall at -1, while Snoddy notched a Top 10 finish in his first career C-USA Championship by tying for 10th at +1. Murray Naysmith (+4) finished tied for 25th and John Hayden (+7) tied for 36th. Robillard (+14) tied for 52nd overall but recovered nicely from a shaky first two rounds to shoot even par on the final 18 holes and help the team advance into the semis.
Rice's Jake Benson won the individual C-USA crown at -5, while there was a three-way tie for second place at -4 between Cooper Sears (MT), Sean Meehan (UTSA) and John Gough (Charlotte).
Match play begins on Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. and fans can click here for live results. Due to weather concerns, it is TBA if the finals of match play will be Wednesday afternoon or Thursday and a determination will be made following the semifinal matches.
