TEXARKANA, Ark. – The UAB men's golf team currently sits in the third place after the opening 36 holes of the 2019 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Championship at Texarkana Country Club.
The Blazers shot a 291 (+3) in the opening round and a 289 (+1) in the second round for a collective 580 (+4), and are five strokes off the team lead which is held by UTSA at -1.
At the conclusion of the tomorrow's final round, the top four teams advance to match play. The Blazers will have to have a strong showing on the final 18 holes as the top of the leader board is jumbled. WKU sits between UTSA and UAB at +3, while Middle Tennessee is fourth (+5), Charlotte fifth (+6), UTEP sixth (+7) and Rice seventh (+9).
Individually, William Walker III is leading the Blazers at -1 and is tied for 10th overall. The top four Blazers are all within four shots of each other as Murray Naysmith was even par today and is tied for 12th, while John Snoddy is +2 (T17) and John Hayden is +3 (T23).
Led by three straight birdies by Walker III to open his first round, the Blazers raced out to a strong front nine and shot even par as a team, but had ups and downs on the back nine and finished the first round at +3.
The Blazers continued their steady play in the second round and fought through adversity to shoot +1 on the second 18 and position themselves for the top four after tomorrow's final round.
Due to weather concerns later in the week, match play may begin on Tuesday afternoon following the morning's final 18 holes. A determination will be made in the morning prior to the start of the third round. Click here for live results.
