BIRMINGHAM – Conference USA Commissioner Judy MacCleoud announced that UAB women's basketball junior guard Rachael Childress is one of 14 recipients of the league's Spirit of Service award.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designated to recognize community efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, academic good standing and participation in their elected sports. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with Wednesday's honoree representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's indoor track and field.
"Rachael is an outstanding young lady that continues to excel in the classroom, on the court, and out in the community," head coach Randy Norton said. "She is one of the biggest character kids and is an outstanding representative of our women's basketball program and of our school."
Childress has been an active member of the Birmingham community since arriving on campus as a freshman in 2016, committing 60 hours of volunteer work. Her work has included wagon washing at Children's of Alabama, visiting the Veteran's Hospital, reading to elementary school kids, and spending time at the Miracle League of Gardendale, helping providing a chance for kids and adults with disabilities play baseball.
In the classroom Childress works just as diligently, carrying a 3.74 GPA in business management. The Moulton, Ala., native has been placed on the Dean's list in three semesters, earned Presidental Honors in the Spring of 2017, has been a member of the league's Commissioner's Honor Roll on three occasions and earned a C-USA Academic Medal in 2017-18. Additionally, Childress is a member of UAB's Collat School of Business Honor's Program, providing students additional class to help them understand their own personal traits to help build more effective leaders.
On the classroom Childress led UAB in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per game and connecting on a school record 110 3-pointers in the 2018-19 season en route to earning Conference USA First-Team honors. The junior became the 29th member of UAB's 1,000-Point Scorers club this past season and enters her senior campaign five triples shy of becoming the all-time leader in 3-point field goals made in school history.
"I am so blessed to receive this award," Childress said. "Playing basketball at UAB has taught me many important things, but one of the main lessons that I have learned is that helping other and doing your best is so important. I love UAB and this community."
