GULF SHORES, Ala. – The UAB women's golf team shot the field's lowest second round score and closed the gap on the two leaders as UAB enters the final round of the Bama Beach Bash in third place.
The Blazers were +8 overall on Saturday and enter Sunday's final 18 holes nine shots behind Bethune-Cookman who leads the field at +22, followed by South Alabama (+29), UAB (+31), Cincinnati (+40) and McNeese State (+47).
"I'm very proud of how our team handled the tough conditions and how we battled to remain at the top of the leaderboard," head coach Ryan Ashburn said. "Both Stephenie [Fowler] and Kenna [Hughes] had big rounds for us and we're excited to compete for the team title tomorrow."
As was the case after yesterday's opening round, the Blazers continue to have four players in the top 15, and all five of UAB's golfers are in the top half of the field entering Sunday.
Sophomore Stephenie Fowler shot her lowest round of the season as she finished with an even par 72 and moved up seven places on the leaderboard into eighth place.
Fowler and the Blazers began the round on 10. After even par on the back nine which featured two birdies and two bogeys, Fowler found herself in trouble with a triple bogey on two, but recovered nicely to birdie four of her remaining seven holes to end her round at even par. Fowler's 72 was UAB's low round of the day.
She, Tia Teiniketo and Maria Donado are all tied for seventh place overall at +7. Donado shot two over on Saturday and moved up four spots, while Teiniketo was four over but only fell one spot.
Junior Kenna Hughes also had a very solid round at two over par and is tied for 13th overall at +2. Freshman Lexie Dawson was eight over par today and is tied for 35th.
Bethune-Cookman's Yudika Rodriguez is leading the field at -2, followed by Amalia Shahzan of Cincinnati (+1) Riley Issac of McNeese State (+3).
Sunday's final round begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun starts. Live results can be found by clicking here.
