Brown Outlasts UAB in CBI First Round 83-78

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – UAB got back-to-back baskets to make the score 79-78 with 7.4 seconds remaining, but could not get past Brown as the Bears took an 83-78 victory over the Blazers on Wednesday night in the First Round of the Roman College Basketball Invitational.
UAB (20-15) was led by Lewis Sullivan with 19 points. Tyreek Scott-Grayson scored a career-high 17 points. Zack Bryant had 14 and Jalen Perry 10. Makhtar Gueye was one rebound shy of a double-double as he scored 12 points and pulled down nine boards.
Brown (20-11) was led by All-Ivy League selection Obi Okolie who scored a game-high 26 points. Joshua Howard added 15, Zach Hunsaker 12, and Chris Sullivan 11 for the Bears. Tamenang Choh recorded a double-double of 10 points and game-highs 11 rebounds and eight assists.
The Bears came out of the gates by scoring the first nine points of the game and built a 12-2 lead at the under-16 media timeout. Howard's 3-pointer at 8:59 made the score 23-10 and gave Brown its largest lead of the half at 13 points.
The Blazers would battle back, making it a two possession contest 3:46 later at 26-20. L. Sullivan's jumper with 1:11 to play made the score 36-34 before C. Sullivan's free throw sent the game into halftime with the Bears leading by three points.
Brown scored the first 10 points of the second half giving them another 13-point advantage. They would maintain a double-digit lead until Gueye's layup at 12:35 made the score 49-40. A 3-pointer by L. Sullivan got the Blazers within four points of tying at 7:23, but Hunsaker answered with a 3-ball on the next possession.
UAB followed with four straight foul shots and a Scott-Grayson's layup and-1 to tie the game at 64-64 with 5:27 to play. Once again, the Bears responded with a 3-pointer – this time from Okolie.
Down six with 1:44 to play, the Blazers made four straight foul shots to cut the deficit to two points, but once again, Brown answered with a 3-pointer by C. Sullivan with 1:10 left.
Layups from Bryant and L. Sullivan at 0:30 and 0:7.4 got the Blazers within a point of tying, but on the inbound, Choh found David Mitchell for a long pass and layup. C. Sullivan made a steal on UAB's next possession and attempted a 3-pointer with 3.9 seconds remaining, which was put back by George Mawanda-Kalema as time expired.
