BIRMINGHAM – After a successful 24-5 regular season campaign and 12-4 mark in league play, good for a second-place overall finish, the UAB women's basketball team opens play in the 2019 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Basketball Championships on Thursday, March 14 at The Star in Frisco.
The Blazers await their opponent as they will play the winner of the No. 7 Charlotte vs. No. 10 Louisiana Tech matchup, scheduled for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
UAB had three players garner All-Conference USA honors as Rachael Childress placed on the first time, while Deanna Kuzmanic and Miyah Barnes placed on the Second Team. Childress leads the team in points per game (14.8) and ranks fourth nationally in 3-point field goals per game (3.7), fifth in 3-point field goals (106) and 17th in 3-point field goal percentage (42.6 percent).
Kuzmanic's Second Team honors came after the senior was tabbed to the 2019 Conference USA All-Academic Team, earning the award for the third consecutive season, becoming the second Blazer all time to garner the honors three years in a row. On the court, Kuzmanic ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.6 points per contest. Entering her final post season as a Blazer, the senior ranks 12th all-time in career points (1,482) and is tied for third in 3-point field goals (245).
The Blazers closed the regular season on a five-game winning streak, including a 95-69 victory over Louisiana Tech in the regular season finale. Three Blazers scored in double figures, as they combined to knock down 17 triples, avenging a loss to the Lady Techsters from earlier in the season.
UAB and Charlotte met one prior time this season with the 49ers taking the contest 60-58 in Charlotte. That loss served as the most recent loss for the Blazers, sparking the team's five-game winning streak to close the 2018-19 regular season campaign.
The Blazers enter the 2019 tournament field as the No. 2 seed, marking just the third time in program history that the Blazers have entered the tournament that high, going in as the No. 2 seed in 2007 and No. 1 in 2018. The Green and Gold are 1-1 all-time as the No. 2 seed, falling in the semifinals to East Carolina in its last appearance as the No. 2.
Fans can follow Thursday's action live on Stadium TV. Those in attendance in Frisco can purchase tickets online, beginning at $20.
