BIRMINGHAM - Coming off a perfect 4-0 weekend at the Blazer Beach Bash to open the season, the UAB beach volleyball heads to Boca Raton this weekend for a huge conference tournament against four nationally ranked opponents at the FAU Invitational.
The Blazers, who are receiving votes in the national polls, will take on CCSA opponents No. 5 Florida State and No. 10 South Carolina on Friday, followed by No. 18 Florida Atlantic and No. 4 LSU on Sunday.
According to the latest MoVR Rankings on collegebeachvb.com, the Blazers have eight players ranked in the top 125, four in the top 30 and two in the top 16, led by UAB's top duo Kenley Adams and SalliAnne Napolitano who are 15th and 16th, respectively.
Adams and Napolitano were 4-0 on court one last week and won all of their matches in straight sets. Court three pairing of Tressa Buckland and Annie Pringle, along with court five duo Jenna Gathright and Emma Andraka also went 4-0.
The field is stacked with talent this weekend, which includes the Seminoles who were the NCAA runner-up last year, and LSU who defeated four nationally-ranked teams last week, included FSU and South Carolina, both by scores of 3-2. LSU has the reigning National Pair of the Week in Kristen Nuss and Claire Coppola.
Following this weekend in Boca, the Blazers will host their second tournament of the season, but it will be at the site of the NCAA National Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala., as UAB hosts the inaugural March to May. This unique tournament is set to become one of the most prestigious regular season tournaments in the country as it allows teams to compete at the venue in which they strive to reach for the NCAA title.
UAB has hosted the last three NCAA National Championships in Gulf Shores, and will continue to do so for at least the next five years.
