BIRMINGHAM - The UAB beach volleyball team is set to open the 2019 season this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23, by hosting the Blazer Beach Bash at the new beach volleyball courts adjacent from the Football Operations Center on the campus of UAB.
The Blazers will host Jacksonville State, Louisiana Monroe, North Alabama and Huntingdon College for the 2019 Blazer Beach Bash. Due to weather in the forecast, Friday's schedule has been altered.
Tournament Schedule:
Friday, February 22:
8 a.m. - Jacksonville State vs. Louisiana Monroe
9 a.m. - UAB vs. Jacksonville State
10 a.m. - Louisiana Monroe vs. Huntingdon College
11 a.m. - UAB vs. North Alabama
12 p.m. - Huntingdon College vs. North Alabama
Saturday, February 23:
8 a.m. - Jacksonville State vs. North Alabama
9:30 a.m. - UAB vs. Louisiana Monroe
11 a.m. - Huntingdon College vs. Jacksonville State
12:30 p.m. - North Alabama vs. Louisiana Monroe
2 p.m. - UAB vs. Huntingdon College
The Blazers open the season receiving votes in the AVCA Top 20 National Poll. UAB spent five weeks receiving votes last year after it defeated No. 8 South Carolina for the program's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent.
Under the direction of second year head coach Kyra Iannone, the Blazers return six players from last year's team and welcome six additions to the 2019 roster. Along with four new freshmen, UAB has added graduate transfers Jaelyn Keene (Illinois State) and Jayme Bratsberg (Simon Fraser) who were both indoor players.
Junior Kenley Adams was named to the CCSA Preseason Watch List earlier this week as one of the top players in the league. Adams finished last season as the No. 28 ranked duo nationally on court one, and looks to continue that momentum at the top of UAB's lineup this season.
With 28 career victories, Adams is more than halfway to the program mark for career wins entering her junior campaign. The record is 50, and Adams looks to put a dent into that number this year. Fellow teammate Emily Martinez has 41 career wins and needs 10 victories this season to become the all-time leader, while Tressa Buckland (33 wins) enters her senior year currently ninth on the career wins list.
Following this weekend, the Blazers head into conference action when they travel South to Boca Raton to play league members Florida State, South Carolina, Florida Atlantic and LSU.
