BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field team opens its 2019-20 season at the BSC Panther Ice Breaker, hosted by Birmingham Southern at the Birmingham Crossplex, on Friday. The event will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's weight throw and run throughout the day.
"We're excited about this upcoming indoor season. The team has really improved over the last few years," said coach Kurt Thomas. "For several years, we've talked about having a young team. Now, all of a sudden, those young athletes are getting older and having more experience. Several of them have scored at Conference USA, so we're really looking forward to putting this team together and starting this indoor season trying to accomplish some team goals. We want to see our athletes come out in the first indoor meet and execute races, jumps and throws to build on as the season progresses."
UAB's first events will be the women's weight throw, shot put, long jump and 3,000m, which is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
Throughout the rest of the day, UAB will compete in the women's pole vault, 60m, 60H, triple jump, high jump, mile, 400m, 800m, and 200m before the women's 1,600 relay, tentatively scheduled for 6:15 p.m. to wrap up the meet. The Blazers will compete in 14 total events on the day.
The event will be UAB's only meet in 2019. Following the conclusion of the meet, the Blazers will kick off 2020 by hosting the Blazer Invitational on Jan. 10 and the Vulcan Invitational on Jan. 11, each at the Birmingham Crossplex. Meet information and coverage will be provided on the UAB track and field schedule page.
The Blazers enter the season with a wealth of experience as they have 29 returners, including seven seniors. Leading the returners is senior Marielle Lewis along with redshirt junior Celestial Moon. Lewis was one of the top two finishers for the Blazers a year ago, concluding her season in the 400 meter hurdle of the 2019 NCAA East Preliminary. Moon was also a major contributor a season ago, scoring in last year's Conference USA Indoor Championships. UAB also added seven newcomers - five freshmen, one transfer and one grad transfer - in this year's class to round out the roster.
