BIRMINGHAM – UAB head men's basketball coach Robert Ehsan has announced that Rongie Gordon (Montgomery, Ala. / Jefferson Davis) has submitted a National Letter of Intent (NLIs) making him the first member of the 2020-21 recruiting class.
"We are really excited to officially welcome Rongie Gordon to our family," said Ehsan. "We have known Rongie and his family for a long time and think that he is a perfect fit for our basketball program and the UAB community. He is very hard working young man who has really seen a lot of growth and development in his game over the past few years."
Gordon spent last season at Sidney Lanier High School before transferring to Jefferson Davis. While with Lanier, he was named to the 5A-7A All-Metro Honorable Mention team while leading the Poets to the 6A Southeast Regional finals.
"Rongie possesses many of the qualities that we look for in a UAB basketball player in terms of his character, work ethic and morals. He has played for some great high school coaches over the last few years as well with Coach Winfred Jordan and the nationally sponsored AAU team Atlanta Xpress. Rongie is a versatile player for his size and has the ability to play inside and outside while affecting the game on both ends of the floor with his athleticism, strength and motor," added Ehsan.
The 6-8, 225-pound forward led the Xpress with 12.0 points per game while shooting 54 percent from the field and 5.5 rebounds per game.
"We can't wait to have Rongie here next year with us and for many years to come as a part of Blazer Nation," concluded Ehsan.
UAB (4-3) hosts No. 11 Memphis (6-1) on Saturday in the annual Bartow Classic. The game will be aired nationally on CBS Sports Network with a tipoff time of 4:30 p.m.
