BIRMINGHAM- The Blazers head to Norman, Okla. after advancing to the second round of the preseason WNIT with a victory over South Alabama yesterday evening.
UAB (1-0) was firing on all cylinders against South Alabama shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from behind the arc. The evening was capped off by seniors Rachael Childress, Angela Vendrell and Miyah Barnes.
Childress put up 26 points with eight three pointers on 15 attempts. Vendrell recorded a double-double reeling in 14 rebounds and putting up 12 points while also recording two blocks and two steals. Barnes registered 11 points and six assists in 34 minutes of action for the Blazers.
Oklahoma (1-0) cruised to a 94-48 victory over Prairie View A&M Friday night in Norman. The Sooners shot an impressive 52.2 percent from the field led by sophomore shooting guard Taylor Robertson's 20 points off seven field goals six of which came from three-point range.
"We played Oklahoma in the Bahamas last year and it was an extremely competitive game," said head coach Randy Norton. "They were very young then and returned the majority of their team so it will be a challenging matchup. Oklahoma has a great history of basketball going to 19 straight NCAA Tournaments, we are excited to play a program with such a rich basketball tradition."
The two teams met a season ago in the Bahamas, a game which the Blazers defeated the Sooners 89-84 with five players recording double digit scoring led by Katelynn Thomas with 22. It was the second meeting between the schools. UAB is 2-0 against Oklahoma all-time with the two pervious matchups coming 10 years apart.
The game is slated for 2 p.m. in Norman and will be available to watch on Fox Sports Oklahoma Plus and live streaming on the Fox Sports Go app.
