BIRMINGHAM- There is a lot of excitement surrounding the UAB women's basketball team this season after back-to-back 25+ win seasons.
Much of the excitement comes from a number of Blazers who are putting up record-setting performances. Seniors Miyah Barnes, Angela Vendrell and Rachael Childress all ranked nationally in multiple offensive categories last season and sit close to the top of several UAB school records.
In anticipation for the start of the 2019-20 season there will be a spotlight on the UAB records that could go down this season. Today highlights senior shooting guard, Rachael Childress.
When it is all said and done, Childress will likely own multiple records at UAB, and it might be a while before anyone takes hers down.
The Alabama native comes into the season as the NCAA's active career leader in 3-pointers made. In fact, she finished last season 12th in the nation in career threes made as just a junior.
Currently sitting in second at UAB with 312 made threes, Childress is just eight away from being the all-time leader in school history. She has recorded 100+ made three-pointers each of the last two seasons.
Shooting 41.7% from behind the arc in her three years, Childress is already the UAB leader in career 3-point percentage and top 15 in the nation. She also sits in second in 3-pointers attempted (748), 111 attempts shy of the top spot.
Childress finished the 2018-19 season eighth in the NCAA in 3-point field goals made (110), 12th in 3-point field goals per game (3.3), and 20th in 3-point field goal percentage (41.5%). Those marks were good enough to lead all players in the conference with at least 100 attempts.
The senior shooting guard became a member of the 1000-point club last December and currently sits at 20th in UAB history in career points (1,293).
It is no secret by now that Childress likes to shoot the three ball, but defenses still have not been able to stop her. With her almost automatic ability to drain shots from behind the arc, trends show that she isn't likely to slow down, leaving the UAB record books ready to be rewritten.
