BIRMINGHAM – The UAB track and field program and coach Kurt Thomas announced the 2019-20 schedule on Friday. The season slate features seven indoor meets at the Birmingham CrossPlex, four of which the Blazers will host, along with the first outdoor meet hosted by UAB in program history at the UAB Track and Field Complex.
"We are excited about our indoor and outdoor schedules for the 2019-2020 track season," said Thomas. "Some things stay the same, and that shows with our indoor season. We are always happy to host great indoor meets at the CrossPlex, and this year is no different."
The Blazers will kick off the indoor season, which consists of the same meets as the previous two seasons, with four straight events at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Birmingham Southern will play host to the season-opener in the Birmingham Southern Ice Breaker for the ninth straight season on Dec. 9. Next, UAB will host two back-to-back events with the Blazer Invitational, also for the ninth straight season, on Jan. 10 and the Vulcan Invitational for the fifth straight season on Jan. 11. The Blazers will then compete in the Samford Multi on Jan. 16 at the same venue.
UAB's first road meet will be the Vanderbilt Invitational on Jan. 17-18 in Nashville, Tenn., for the seventh straight season. The Blazers will return home after to host the first Green and Gold Invitational on Jan. 24-25 back at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The Blazers will then make their final road trip of the indoor season with a weekend in the northeast for the third straight year. UAB will begin the stint at the Crimson Elite, hosted by Harvard in Cambridge, Mass. on Jan. 31. The following day, the Blazers will be in action in Boston, Mass. for Boston University's Scarlett and White Invite on Feb. 1.
"We will send a group up to Vanderbilt to compete against quality Power Five competition. We get to host a second weekend at the CrossPlex before we head up to Boston for the third year in a row to compete at Harvard and Boston U. Those meets have always served us well, and this year should be no different."
UAB will head home to wrap up the indoor season with two final meets at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Blazers will compete in the Samford Invitational for the eighth straight year on Feb. 14 to conclude the regular season, then host the Conference USA Indoor Championships for the ninth straight year on Feb. 22-23.
"We'll return home to compete at Samford all in preparation for our most important indoor meet, the CUSA Indoor Championships here at home. The schedule allows us to compete against some of the best in the country every week and get our athletes ready to score points at CUSAs."
The Blazers will begin their outdoor slate by hosting the Spring Time Invite on March 20-21 at the UAB Track and Field Complex, the first meet to be hosted at UAB's new facility.
"This outdoor schedule is particularly special because it includes a home outdoor meet on campus for the first time in UAB history. We will open up our outdoor season at home on our brand new Mondo track."
UAB will then be on the road for the remainder of its outdoor schedule. The Blazers will begin the road stretch at the Mississippi State Relays on March 27-28 in Starkville, Miss., followed by three more meets hosted by SEC schools. The Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. will come next on April 2-4, with part of the team competing in Auburn's Tiger Track Classic on April 3-4. The War Eagle Invite, also hosted by Auburn, will follow on April 17-18 as some Blazers compete at the Duke Invite in Durham, N.C. on the same two days. The Blazers will have competed in an Auburn-hosted event for nine straight seasons and the Florida Relays for five straight years following this year's meets.
"A trip to Mississippi State will be a great challenge for our sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers crew. The next weekend, we will take a strong group to compete at the prestigious Florida Relays while the majority of the team will head to an always competitive Auburn meet. We will take a week off before splitting up again for the distance crew to race at Duke while the rest of the team will again go to Auburn."
To potentially finish the regular season, UAB will continue working through its SEC ledger next at the LSU Alumni Gold on April 25 in Baton Rouge, La. The Blazers are also tentatively scheduled to compete at Mississippi State's Maroon and White Invite in Starkville, Miss. on May 1-2.
Following the regular season, UAB will compete in the Conference USA Outdoor Championships in San Antonio, Texas May 14-17.
"The sprinters, jumpers and throws athletes will go to LSU's Alumni Gold meet in a highly competitive meet. Again, all of that will help prepare us for a trip to UTSA for the C-USA outdoor meet in mid-May. For those who can qualify, we will then head to the NCAA Preliminary meet at the University of Kentucky for a chance to qualify for NCAA finals."
