UAB Finishes Eighth in MEAC #1

BIRMINGHAM- The No. 19 UAB Blazers posted a solid 5-5 record over the weekend to finish in eighth place at its first MEAC event of the season.

The Blazers started competition on Friday with the usual 5 baker matches. UAB started with a close 975-943 loss to No. 7 Maryland Eastern Shore. The Blazers stayed focus to pick up a 957-850 win over Coppin State. After back to back losses to No. 8 North Carolina A&T (986-919) and No. 15 Delaware State (1,092-910), UAB finished day one with a 985-892 win over Howard. The Blazers were 2-3 going into the second day of competition.Β Β

On Saturday, UAB started traditional match play with two tough losses to Morgan State (885-881) and No. 25 Monmouth (920-884). The Blazers would secure an 870-868 nail-biting win against Florida A&M. UAB would have a bye round with a total pinfall of 891 to set up its next match against Bethune Cookman that resulted in an 865-794 win. UAB was 4-5 overall heading into their last day of competition in fifth place.Β

On Sunday, the Blazers had another traditional match against Norfolk State before the bracket round. UAB picked up a 969-810 win to go into the next round with confidence. After a hard fought first round, the Blazers would lose to Coppin State 4-1 (168-159, 164-190, 162-194, 147-178, and 159-171) to finish the competition in eighth place and fifth in MEAC standings with a 5-5 record.Β

Taylor Russell would lead the way with a total pinfall of 1,138 to finish in 11th place. Jamie Krasnigor(1,089) and Samantha Johnson (1,056) finished in 15th and 23rd, respectively, to finish the Blazers in the top 25 individually.Β

UAB will return to the lanes for their fall finale on November 15-17 in Greensboro, N.C. for the Stallings Invitational hosted by North Carolina A&T.Β
