BIRMINGHAM – With the regular season in the rearview, the UAB cross country team will head to Bowling Green, Ky. to compete in the 2019 Conference USA Cross Country Championships, hosted by WKU. The women's side of the meet is scheduled to run a 5,000-meter race on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Kereiakes Park. Championship awards will follow the conclusion of the race.
UAB most recently earned a 10th-place finish against a field of 30 teams in its home-hosted Blazer Invitational. Eight different girls clocked career-best times as redshirt junior Celestial Moon paced the Blazers by shattering her previous career best by over a minute to finish in 37th place. Rounding out the UAB top three were freshman Lauren Robinson and sophomore Laura Thompson, who finished just behind Moon in the top 50 and also achieved personal bests.
The Blazers' best finish as a team to date was in the season-opening Memphis Twilight Classic, when the team finished sixth overall. Robinson and senior Serena Martinez both placed in the top-20 in the event, running 18:37.95 and 18:41.98, respectively. UAB had four additional runners - Thompson, Moon, Bethan Evans and Britney Johnson - place in the top 50 in Memphis.
On the season, Robinson, Martinez and Moon have led the Blazers through each meet. Robinson has posted two team-best finishes this year, while Martinez and Moon have each been the first Blazer to finish once.
Following Saturday's action, UAB will await potential selection to the NCAA South Regional to further the season.
