BIRMINGHAM – The UAB bowling team kicks off their 2019-20 season as they travel to Kenner, La. to compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational hosted by Tulane.
The Blazers return 12 of 14 players from last season's team and enters the season ranked No. 19 in the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) preseason poll.
"We are so excited to head back to our favorite kick-off tournament of the year," head coach Michelle Crews said. "We have competed in the Allstate Sugar Bowl as our first tournament of the year for as long as I can remember. It is a great, quality field that allows us to see where we are with our team chemistry, spare shooting, and execution as we are preparing hard for our first MEAC event next month. Tulane does a fantastic job hosting the event, and we love the New Orleans atmosphere. We have been anxiously awaiting our first event, and the team is ready to hit the lanes stronger than ever."
The team will begin the tournament with five Baker game matches on Friday before competing in five Team games on Saturday. The weekend concludes with three best of seven Baker matches on Sunday.
Competing this weekend will be Taylor Russell, Rachel Strogin, Sierra Lewis, Annie Hurley, Elise London, Samantha Johnson, Cameron Snyder, Cayla Davidson and Jamie Krasnigor.
The Blazers are no strangers to this invitational. Last year, the Blazers went 10-3 in the competition en route to a sixth-place finish. Of those 10 wins, three of them came against teams that were ranked in the top 10 at the time.
UAB is one of nine ranked teams in the field this weekend, including No. 1 Vanderbilt, No. 3 Sam Houston State, No. 5 Stephen F. Austin,No. 7 Maryland Eastern Shore, No. 8 North Carolina A&T, No. 13 Lincoln Memorial, No. 14 Tulane and No. 17 Louisiana Tech
