UAB Hosts Blazer Classic for Second Consecutive Year

BIRMINGHAM – For its fourth meet as a team this season, the UAB cross country team will host the Blazer Classic at the Motevallo Cross Country Course in Montevallo, Ala. on Friday. The Blazers will kick off the second year of the event with the women's 6,000-meter race, beginning at 9 a.m. CT. All men's teams competing will follow with an 8,000-meter race at 9:45 a.m. CT.
On the women's side, UAB will welcome 29 other programs to complete the 30-team field. No. 11 Florida State, Alabama, Belmont, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, Mississippi State and Troy, to name a few, will make the trip.
The Blazers' best finish as a team to date was in the season-opening Memphis Twilight Classic, when the team finished sixth overall. Freshman Lauren Robinson and senior Serena Martinez both placed in the top-20 in the event, running 18:37.95 and 18:41.98, respectively. UAB had four additional runners - Laura Thompson, Celestial Moon, Bethan Evans and Britney Johnson - place in the top 50 in Memphis.
On the season, Robinson and Martinez have led the Blazers through each meet. Robinson has posted two team-best finishes this year, while Martinez finished first for the Blazers in Nashville.
Following Friday's action, UAB will head to Bowling Green, Ky. for the Conference USA Championship. The meet is scheduled for Nov. 2 with race times to be announced on a later date.
